The beautiful Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architech Jørn Utzon, has become the very symbol of Sydney. Along with the beautiful Harbor Bridge, it’s the first image travellers conjure up when they begin planning a trip to Australia.

Touring the Opera House is very easy, actually. Just go to the base of the structure (there’s an entrance on the side facing the Circular Quay that seems to go UNDER the area…that’s where you buy your tour tickets.) Tours are A$23 for adults and A$16 for students/seniors. Students MUST have an approved student ID card to get the discount. A family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) can tour for A$63. The tour lasts about an hour, and is very entertaining. You’re not allowed to take photographs inside the concert halls, which is a bit disappointing, as they’re so impressive. But still, I enjoyed the tour. And, I’d never realized that the “Opera House” was actually a complex. There is one major hall, and several more minor ones within the complex, for a variety of theatrical and musical uses. There is a concert hall, an opera theater, a drama theater, a playhouse, a studio, and an exhibition hall. The basic one hour tour departs every half hour between 9 am and 5 pm. You also get a free coffee, tea or soft drink upon the tour’s end. Get the coffee. : )

If you really want to get into the Opera House, you can take a “Backstage Tour” for A$140 per person. This lasts approximately 2 hours, and starts at 7 am. The cost includes a light breakfast.

Or, here’s what I’d do….and will do the next time I go to Sydney… I’m going to find a show of some kind to attend. I’d love to enjoy the accoustics of this magnificent place. I can’t imagine how terrific it would be to enjoy the Sydney Symphony, permanent residents of the Opera Hall. : )

Amazing structures in the highly condensed area of Circular Quay. The view of the entire city skyline with the opera house and the bridge on its edges.I was amazed to learn that it is actually several separate buildings that form the famous roof.

No matter how many times I visit Sydney; the Opera House still has an affect on me. The Opera House appears different depending on the angle and time of day. Some days it glows bright white in the sun, when the sun starts to set it can have a pinkish tint and at night is shines like the moon in a dark sky.

If you were to set out the pictures around Sydney from different vantage points, and include a single picture of the Sydney Opera house, I guarentee just about every person who looked at the pictures would immediately point out the Opera House first as the most recognizable symbol of this city. Its unique architecture certainly draws stares from all who look at it. An amazing piece of design by Jorn Utzen of Denmark has been the trademark of the city since its construction began in the late 1950’s. Although I did not get a chance to go inside and view an opera, the outside was more than enough to make me want to return and enjoy!

Guided tours are available, as well as plenty of sights to see from the outside grounds.

The Sydney Opera House is situated on Sydney Harbour at Bennelong Point and is considered by many to be one of the wonders of the modern world.

It was designed by a Dane, Jørn Utzon and was constructed under some controversy and was first opened in October 1973.

The Opera House is one of Sydney’s most enduring and popular icons with tourists and travellers from all over the world who come to visit, photograph and stand diminitutively under the sail like structures of the cultural centre of Sydney.

I couldn’t quite stand in complete awe of it as the Opera House was very heavily guarded during my short visit which happened to coincide with the 2007 APEC Summit.

Of course you have too see one of Sydney’s most famous sights: the Opera House.
The construction started already in 1959 with the Danish architect Joern Utzon in charge. In 1966 Utzon left the project to an consortium of Australian architects to design the interior. Costs of building exceeded the budget dramatically and lotteries had to be staged to secure the financing. The building was finally completed in 1973 and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II.
I saw a ballett here. Nice performance as far as I could see… you don’t have a great sight from the cheaper seats.
You can also tour the Opera House in the mornings and afternoons.

The Sydney Opera House is located to the left of Circular Quay(depending on the direction you are facing). It is a magnificent sight to see, from a distance or close up. Unique in architechture, I believe there is nothing in the world quite like it. Use your imagination, to some it looks like huge shells, to others sails on a ship.
There are tours available, on certain days, at certain times, at different prices.
Also, if you were interested in watching a performance there, look online to get an idea of something you’d like to see before you plan your trip.
An interesting fact would include the following:Construction of the opera house was very complicated. Originally, budget for construction was estimated to be $900,00. In the end, well over budget, total construction estimated approximately $102,000,000. Wow! What a difference.

While I didn’t go inside the Opera House, walking around it is impressive all the same. It is situated on the harbour, with the Harbour Bridge right across from it. It may be one of the places that all tourists go to see in Sydney, but there is a reason for this – it’s stunning, the architecture is amazing.

Tip: Walk around the Opera House, then have a seat where the Harbour Bridge is right in front of you and the Opera House behind you, and just take it all in.

Trivia: there are 1,056,00 Swedish ceramic tiles on the roof.

THE quintessential portrait of Sydney starts with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, as photographed from MacQuarie’s chair. There’s no more poignant and representative image of this great city than these two world-famous images. The previous tip discussed the Opera House….

But for the more adventurous sort, we can talk about Sydney’s Harbour Bridge…

From a cartological standpoint, the Sydney Harbour Bridge connects Dawes Point and the Rocks in Sydney to North Sydney, via the Bradfield Highway. The bridge was completed in 1932 and is 1,132 meters long. It accomodates pedestrian walkways, and only requires less than an hour to walk across and back. You’ll be rewarded with another spectacular look at downtown Sydney, and you’ll get a breath of fresh harbor air as you do so. Now, as you may know, you may CLIMB the Harbour Bridge, for an even more scintillating look at Sydney. But, if that sounds a bit athletic, you might want to stop off at the Pylon Lookout, which is on the SE pylon of the bridge. For about A$5 (adults), you can walk up about 200 steps to a point some 100 meters high, which affords a great view.

OK, the pylon will get you a “little high” at the Harbour Bridge. For info on getting “extremely high” at the Harbour Bridge, see the following tip. ; )

A lot of friends when visiting Sydney always ask if we can cross the famous “coathanger ” Harbour bridge…my advise to travellers in Sydney..get a train across and walk back.(thats the budget way).The first stop over the bridge from the city is MILSONS POINT STATION..any train going to the northern suburbs of Sydney stops at Milsons Point..when travelling across the bridge by train sit upstairs ..as the trains are “double decker” that way you will get the best view..The acess to the footpath across the bridge is easily reached by stairs outside the Milsons Point Railway Station.. The views from the bridge walkway are excellent and good photos of the Opera House , the Quay, and the cities panorama are taken from here..Also many photos of the Harbour Bridge can be taken from Milsons point also..the walkway over the bridge will take you back to “The Rocks” area of Sydney …right by Circular Quay for train or ferry travel.
There is a bridge walk that you can do to the top of the span…but its very expensive..

All right, kids… the previous tip spoke of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge, and even told you of a way to improve your view of the city FROM the bridge via the Pylon Lookout.

Now, we get serious. As you’ve heard, you are allowed to actually CLIMB the Harbour Bridge. That’s right….you can freaking climb the bridge, on TOP of it. Shudder….

So, if you’re the super adventurous type, or if your friends are pressuring you to try and you can’t find a way to save face, here’s the scoop. As for the Aussiedoug angle, here it is… Doug’s wife Kerry bought him a gift climb of the Harbour for Christmas. Doug still hasn’t cashed it in, for a variety of reasons. All of them seemed good to me, but still…. Doug’s gotta climb this bridge pretty soon, or Kerry’s out a pile of money.

People have been allowed to climb the bridge since 1998. The experience takes about 3 hours. You check in at BridgeClimb, over at the SE part of the bridge. Climbers leave in small groups every 10 minutes or so. You wear a bridge suit, you’re harnessed to a line. You are also breath-tested for alcohol and are banned from carrying ANYTHING, including cameras. The cost for a daylight climb is around A$200 for adults (as of 2011, per my VT pal mallyak), and a bit less for kids aged 12-16. Twilight climbs are more.

OK two things…. I hear the climb is spectacular. And second, I can’t relate personal experience. Two reasons are that it’s pricy AND I hate that ban on cameras. Hell, if I’m climbing the darned bridge, I want a photo.

But, the biggest reason that I did not climb is that my daughter wanted no part of the endeavor. And this trip to Oz was, mostly, HER dream trip. I’d never have thought of leaving her below for a three hour climb. (Sounds a bit like that “three hour tour” on Gilligan’s Island, doesn’t it?)

If you want to climb the bridge, book early. It fills up fast.

The Bridge climb is a memorable experience. Everyone regardless of age should give it a try. It was the most wonderful experiece for us.
You are attached with a harness and are climbing ladders and steep stairs. Meanwhile you look down and there is traffic rushing through on the street below you. The traffic makes the bridge shake a little, but you forget about that once you’re up there. Rafi was scared of height but I dragged him up there and now he wants to do it again Avg price is around $150.00 per person, depending on which tour you want to take.

Today I went into town (aussiespeak for going into the city) with the express purpose of walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge & catching the ferry back to Circular Quay. Seemed like the ideal morning out with beautiful blue skys, very few clouds in the sky & a maximum temperature of a bit over 25 Celsius.

Well the best laid plans of mice & me do indeed often go astray. Bu t not too badly in this case.

I was a bit late starting & taking lots of photos before I’d actually stepped foot on the Bridge walkway didn’t help (either did stopping at Rozelle on the way in for brunch. lol!)

So at 11.30 I started off enjoying the blue sky & dazzling lateish Spring sunshine (yes forgot my hat didn’t I!!!). A mere 5 minutes or so into the walk I came upon a sign saying Pylon Lookout so thinking to myself, “This could lead to some more beautiful photo opportunities” I decided to climb the 200 steps to get up to the Pylon Lookout.

And well worth it, it was for sure! Excellent views in all directions. Some great photos (if only my memory card reader & computer would co-operate I’d be able to tell!). Also very informative recreations using dummies & props to show us a little of what it was like for the workers without today’s much stricter Occupation , Health & Safety standards.

You will get a lot of information about the facts e.g. It’s a 2 hinged single span steel arch bridge, 1149m lon (including approach spans).
The hinges are necessary because on very hot day it can expand up to 18 cm. And lots more. It isn’t a case of information overload though & there are some gr8 photos to go with it. My photo here is taken from one of theirs.

The only reason I would even fathom the idea of climbing a bridge was because I saw people doing it on the Travel Channel. I told myself, if I ever go to Sydney, I am going to do that. Apparently, thousands of other people must have seen the same tv special, because thousands of people do this every year. Several celebrities have done it also, so that makes me feel kinda special.
It is a unforgettable experience, and I advise you to book online well in advance. IT is a popular attraction.
The whole process takes about 3.5 hours. You check in, get dressed in these windbreaker body suits( I went during their winter season, so it might be a different getup if you go during the summertime.), gather your equipment and go through a quick training class (so you know how to work you equipment), then you head out towards the bridge with your personal guide. There are usually 10 people to a group and it is best if you are up front near the guide, versus all the way in the back of the pack where you feel somewhat forgotten.
Be prepared to climb up steep ladders and cross catwalks…then prepare for the amazing view!

One of the highlight of our Blue Mountain tour was the opportunity to see kangaroos in their natural habitat and not in a zoo.

Our guide told us to be very quiet and walk slowly and you will be able to get close to the kangaroos, but be careful as they can kick you quite hard.

Well, doing my best Elmer Fudd impression (ssh you must be vewy vewy quiet!) I got within touching distance of the kangaroos. They were such wonders to behold! Again like seeing monuments or places on TV or in books that you have seen so many times before, it is awe inspiring to see these places and creatures for real.

We really wanted to see the Blue Mountains which, are not really mountains but foothills at approximately 2,228 meteres (which is 7310 in feet).

I had wanted to go with another travel company that offered the Jenolan caves and the Blue Mountains but our hosts at the B&B; strongly recommended Oz Trails. When I compared the two tours it was clear that the best bargin for the money was Oz Trails. The provided morning tea and lunch which was included in our fare, the other tour company did not.

Jeff was our tour guide and despite him being Scottish, he was certainly knowledgeable about Sydney and the Blue Mountains. He told a funny story about a man he had on a tour who told him “I went to Scotland and had an Australian tour guide and I come to Australia and now have a Scottish tour guide!”

Give this company a looksee next time you are planning a trip to Sydney and are in need of a good day tour, then I highly recommend

I would highly recommend you to visit Blue Mountains on your own. That’s really no need to join a tour.

Go to Central Railway to take the train to Katoomba or Leura Station. It’s a very enjoyable 2 hr train ride, with scenery of outsskirts sydney.

Visit the sydney train website for information on the time schedules and prices, i think i paid about $11 AUD per way from Central Railway to Katoomba.

I took the 9.02am train and arrived at Katoomba 2 hours later. You can hop on the trolley buses directly at Katoomba train station and visit the places of interest at your own pace.

Although the Blue Mountains really can not be done properly in one-day, if you are headed to Sydney, you are really missing out if you do not see them! Located about an hour and a half outside of Sydney to the West, Blue Mountains National Park is a great adventure looking into the Australian countryside. Wentworth Falls is a great spot to hike and see the picturesque waterfall, Katoomba is the home to the Three Sisters and Scenic World, and then there is always the element of shopping in the little town streets throughout the journey. If you are on limited time, I would definitely recommend spending a little of it out here!

We made our way to the Three Sisters by going to the town of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. We bought tickets for the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest railway (it was either $7AU or $17AU—I forgot—but I’m more inclined to say $7). The ride is a vertical drop, but not rollercoaster drop. It’s a nice leisurely speed, but exciting nonetheless cuz you do end up almost standing at some point, it’s so steep. I assumed the railway only goes in one direction which is down, but a VT member pointed out she’s taken it up before. We took either the Scenic Skyway or Sceniscender (I forget which one was out of commission at the time) back up to the gift shop area.

The Three Sisters are three vertical rock formations that stand side by side. Three beautiful sisters were turned into stone by a witchdoctor to protect them from danger. At that time, some warriors (they were brothers too) from a rival tribe wanted to marry the Sisters but inter-tribal marriage was a big no no. War broke out when the brothers decided to kidnap them anyway. The witchdoctor died before restoring them to human form.

Possibly the most visited site in the Blue Mountains! The view is just spectacular on a good sunny day! Come and see how blue are the Blue Mountains! (The bluish mist is caused by fine mists of eucalytus oil floating in the air which distort sunlight into a bluish hue)

THE LEGEND OF THE THREE SISTERS

The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.
These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry.
The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.
As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

A visit to Sydney would not be complete without a visit to the Taronga park zoo..this zoo is in such a wonderful location and is just a wonderful place to spend a day..there are all the Australian native animals here to be seen and up close ..walk among many species of Kangaroos and Wallabies..visit the Koala Bear house..and the nocturnal house is a must…great photo opportunities..set right on the shores of the Harbour some good photos of the city are here also..great conservation programmes here also with Western Plains Zoo..(see my Dubbo page) on the Western Plains zoo..

I admit I am not a zoo expert, but this seems like a pretty good one to me. Not only does it have a huge variety of animals, it has one of the best views of Sydney.

Take a friend or take the family, this is a nice way to spend a day in Sydney for tourists and locals alike.

Kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, native birds, assorted marsupials, reptiles, crocs are all here as well as lions, tigers and bears! You’ll also see rhinos. apes, monkeys, elephants and for a few $ you can feed the giraffes and get a photo with them too!

There is no shortage of options for lunch or a snack, if you plan ahead you can bring a lunch with you and enjoy the many areas to have a bite to eat. There’s also at least one big gift shop with a big variety of goodies or souvenirs.

For the best value, make a whole day of it!

Taronga Zoo is a great zoo. It is situated at the north shore of Sydney. You have to take the ferry to get there from Circular Quay. Once on the other side of the harbour you can either decide to walk to the top, since the zoo is built on a hill, or you can take the chair lift, which is much more relaxing and exciting too.

Once at the top you can explore your way from there. A lot of the animals in the zoo are native australian animals. At the entrance you can immediately see some koalas for example. To get really close to them you can pay 3 dollars, which I thought was really worth it. On to the kangaroos, platypuses, emus etc. So much to see in this zoo, that also has a great view over Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

A good tip is that you can buy a ticket at the Circular Quay ferry terminal which includes a return ferry trip to the zoo and entrance to the
zoo for only 31 dollars.

Taronga Zoo is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon. If arriving from the ferry, take the chairlift or bus to the top (Taronga Zoo is on a hill) – they’re free. From the top its easy to work your way down.

There is a lot to do, there is the seal show and the bird show, both of which are entertaining and informative. You can also (for a dollar or two) get your picture taken feeding a giraffe or standing right next to a koala. If you are travelling solo one of the zoo staff will happily take a photo for you.

There are also many places in Taronga Zoo where you get superb views of Sydney Harbour.

The only thing is that buying lunch can be a bit on the expensive side.

If you love animals like I do, it would be worth your time to check out the zoo. This famous harbourside zoo is home to over 2,000 animals and is just a ferry ride away out of Circular Quay.
Once you arrive, you pay a reasonable entrance fee and are whisked away by cable car to the the upper main entrance of the zoo.
The zoo is clean, well kept, and does not smell. The animals seem to be quite happy here.
Special emphasis is placed on unique Australian wildlife exhibits, and animals are contained in environments closely resembling their natural habitat.
Maps are provided, so you know where you are heading when wandering down the many walkways. There is also a refreshment stand there. If you are tired, thirsty, or hungry, you can stop here to get a bite.
If you want to take a picture with a koala, you can, for a fee.My advice to you, go to Featherdale (about 30 minutes out of Sydney by train) where you can take your picture with a koala for free. Another thing, I know they used to let you hold the koalas in the past, but because it causes stress to the animal, they now prohibit that. Sure, how would you feel if hundreds of people wanted to hold you and flash cameras in you face everyday? Not fun at all.
I especially recommend that you stop by and watch the chimpanzees. I spent most of my time there watching their comical acts. They do some really weird stuff.
When leaving the zoo, and heading out to the ferry, notice the small beach to the right. That little beach is home to a group of faery penguins ( the smallest penguins in the world!). They go out to sea during the day and return to their little burrows in the sand at night. Just some info that I thought you might like to know.
I could go on and on, but the best thing for you is to go and see for yourself!

Located across the harbor and accessed by boat, this is Australia largest and best known zoo. Here, one can see animals from all over the world. But it is the exhibits on native animals that attracts most visitors. Gray and Red Kangaroos can be seen in open enclosures. Koalas, Tasmanians Devils and a host of other aussie critters can be seen as well. If your not looking for wildlife in the wild, this is perhaps the best place to get to see the full range of Australian animals in one place. Of course, there are birds, reptiles and amphibians as well. For anyone interested in nature, the Taronga Zoo is a must.

Taronga Park is where i wanted to visit on my Birthday in Sydney. Chris and I hopped on a ferry from Circular Quay to the Zoo. The ferry left us off at the pier and we had the option of taking a bus or a sky tram to the Zoo. The bus line was shorter so we hopped on board the bus for a short five minute ride up the hill to the zoo entrance. I coul;d hardly wait to see the Koalas that I had been so eagerly anticipating since we arrived in Sydney.

Taronga Park has an unelievable collection of animals from around the world as well as Native Australian species. Our first stop in the zoo was to experience an Animal Encounter with a Koala. We waited in line and enjoyed watching some of the Koalas sleep and get fed. Our turn came fast and we took a picture with a cute little Fuzzball that decided he wanted to “eat” my head. It turns out my shampoo had australian Aloe and was atrating the little guy for a closer inspection. Thankfully a trainer came and scoped him up before the claws reached my head.

The zoo was a fun day of taking in the animal exhibits and the great views of Sydney Harbour. some of my favorite exhibits were the koalas, kangaroos, giraffe, meerkats, mountain goats and red pandas. It was a fun adventure and a perfect way to spend my birthday morning/afternoon.

“The Rocks” is site of Sydney’s oldest settlements. Years ago, prostitutes, hoodlums, criminals and probably politicians (just joking) used to roam these streets, making life a bit dicey.

Today, “The Rocks” has been gutted and restored as a historical treasure. It’s now home to cafes, pubs, shops and other items of tourism interest.

On Saturdays, there is a huge outdoor market held at the Rocks, and we had a chance to enjoy it. There’s nothing of major consequence for sale at said market….just lots of “flea market” type stuff… Jellies and jam, calenders, handicrafts, music, incense, and even emu oil. (see my warning regarding emu oil. : )

There are quite a few restaurants in “the Rocks”, and some of them are quite pricey. We had some pizza at Zia Pina (see tip), and it was very good. I also noticed the famous Lowenbrau Keller on our way down George Street. They advertise it as being the place where “it’s always Oktoberfest”. Looked kind of like Oktoberfest to me, except that a few patrons weren’t completely drunk. ; )

Anyway, go explore the Rocks. See what treasures you can dig up. BTW, you’ll be passing through the Rocks on your way to the Harbour Bridge.

Although alot of travel trips are not booked perfectly, if your plans include a weekend in Sydney, I would highly recommend strolling through the Rocks. On weekends it is turned into a large shopping area where you can haggle on some great local art, handicrafts and also sample some unique food. Although alot of the shops in this marketplace also have storefronts throughout Sydney, your best bet is to come in late in the day when the shop owners are fretting over having to pack up all the wares to ship back to the store, and might be enticed to drop a couple bucks off the price rather than repack.

The first building at the same place where you will now find the Observatory, used to stand a windmill and that was also the first european building. The Observatory houses some of the oldest astronomical instruments of Australia. Entrance to the Observatory is free. However if you want to have a peek through the telescopes you have to make an appointment for the evening and then you do have to pay a few dollars.

When at the Quay..visit the historical Rocks area of Sydney…right by the Quay (FERRY WHARVES)at the southern end of the bridge and also lower George Street..situated in this area is what is left of the very first buildings that were built here at time of settlement..time obviously has taken its toll here with a lot of the buildings being demolished at the time of the plague in Sydney town..also being by the docks this was a certainly dangerous place to be at night in early days ..with all sorts of theives and villains occupying this area…There was a move to demolish most of the old buildings in the early seventies but thanks to the black bans introduced by the BLF unions and after many demos..these unique and prescious buildings of Sydneys heritage and history were saved..this historical area today can be enjoyed just walking around the streets and taking in this old part of Sydney…the first and oldest pub(s) are here (see my tips)and Cadmans cottage (headquarters of the NPWLS) National Parks and Wildlife Service..it is all so easily accessible by foot…

The Rocks is nestled at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and on the western shores of Sydney Cove. It is the foundation place of Sydney and Australia, and of enormous historical signifiance. It is often described as “Sydney’s outdoors museum”.
The Rocks is the oldest area of Sydney and has recently undergone an amazing metamorphosis, the old district being transformed into a vibrant pocket of cafes and restaurants and interesting tourist shops and stalls. This has been achieved without destroying the area’s Old World charm and historic buildings. Sydney’s town planners have put in place a sensitive conservation program that has preserved the heritage and character of The Rocks and brought about an interesting fusion of modern amenities in an old and valued setting.

The Queen Victoria Building, or QVB as referred to by the locals, takes up an entire city block and is completely filled with about 190 shops. All sorts of shops like clothing, jewellery, shoes, art, hairdresser etc. are presented. There are also loads of places where you can have a classy – read expensive – sandwich. However the lower ground level of the QVB is connected to the Myer department store and there you will find a superb foodcourt with cheap food of all sorts.

When you visit the QVB make sure you go to the top level where you can find Peter Lik’s Gallery. You’ll be amazed by his photography. Prices are quite steep, but if you want to have a souvenir like this, this is the best place to go.

When the adjacent Queen Victoria Building was being restored in the 1980s Malaysian developers, Ipoh Gardens, decided that an exterior sculpture of Queen Victoria would be an appropriate addition.

The hunt for a second-hand statue commenced and in the end Ireland obliged. Having found the requisite statutory something was required to cover an unsightly air vent from an underground car park which sat about 10 metres from where Her Majesty was to be erected.

To complement the Queen’s statue, Sydney sculptor Justin Robson was commissioned to produce a bronze sculpture (based on Victoria’s own 1843 sketch) of her favourite pet dog, a Skye terrier called Islay as the centrepiece for a wishing well. He did a splendid job on the dog though in 2002, dog aside, the Sydney Morning Herald (I feel, not unfairly) described the wishing well/air vent thus “From a distance it looks like a Parisian pissoir, but as you get closer, you realise there is no way to get inside”.

Islay, whenever he saw Queen Victoria would sit up and beg for a biscuit – he now, in his familiar sitting up mode begs for the deaf and blind children of Australia. A plaque on the wishing well features a poem telling the story of Islay (with braille translation) while four proverbs highlighting the morality of giving are also featured in six different languages.

An additional and somewhat peculiar addition to the wishing well is a stone from the battlements of Blarney Castle in Ireland. This is securely fixed to the rim of the well and is the subject of my separate review – “Kiss the Blarney Stone – In Sydney?”

Islay silently went about his business of collecting money for deaf and blind children until 1996 when he received the power of speech in the form of the recorded dulcet tones of local radio shock-jock, John Laws. As you pass by now Islay encourages you to make a wish and cast a coin into the well in aid of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

“Hello, my name is Islay,” announces Islay in a deep voice. “…Because of the many good deeds I’ve done for deaf and blind children, I have been given the power of speech”. The pièce de résistance is Islay’s two barks of thanks at the end of the routine.

The real Islay died on 26th April 1844, aged five, fallowing an altercation with a cat and is buried in Adelaide Cottage, Windsor Castle, UK.

A change of subject, if I may?

Many people have the impression that Australian’s walk around in shorts and thongs (the foot-ware variety!) and lack any sense of fashion. I trust the lady in my final photo helps squash this vile impression forever and proves that fashion is alive and well, in Sydney at least!

He or she who kisses the Blarney Stone is filled with eloquence and has a way with words or, as many would say, has the gift of the gab or is full of the blarney. Wabat has kissed the Blarney stone, not once, but twice!

“The” Blarney Stone is high up and set into the battlements of Blarney Castle in Ireland and to kiss it used to involve being dangled, by the legs, over the edge of the Castle wall – at some significant distance from the ground. I understand a somewhat less risky method is now employed.

Why am I telling you this in a tip on Sydney? Let me explain.

This is one of those instances where it pays to keep your eyes peeled to your surroundings. One of the best known buildings in Sydney is the Queen Victoria Building and tis somewhat of a tourist magnet. A lesser number of people stop to have a look at a statue of Queen Victoria just outside the building (City Hall side), an even smaller number have a look at a nearby (10 metres) wishing well and few take note of a stone stuck to the lip of the wishing well.

This stone – about 10-15cm square and the subject of this tip – is, as the plaque states a stone from the Battlements of Blarney Castle. It is not, and I repeat, It is not part of the Blarney Stone. Alas, my dear friends, kiss it you may and many do, but if you want the gift of eloquence you really do have to go to Ireland.

Why this stone is Sydney and why it is attached to a wishing well related to Queen Victoria – not the most revered of British monarchs in Ireland – is somewhat of a mystery. The statue, wishing well and stone all went on display in Sydney in 1987.

From the plaque accompanying the stone, one can ascertain that it was a gift to the people of Sydney from the Lord Mayor of Cork, through the courtesy of Sir Richard Colthurst. The Colthurst family own Blarney Castle and Sir Richard, being short of funds like many of the landed gentry in the seventies and the eighties, opened Blarney Castle to the public. Perhaps having a bit of it on display in Sydney was a form of advertising. I really don’t know.

Do have a look but its no substitute for going to Ireland.

The Queen Victoria building takes up an entire city block. The building is beautiful in its Romaneque revival architecture. The building was deigned by architect George McRae and opened in 1898. The building was named after the ruling Monarch, Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

The building has a central dome of glass and copper which gives the interior a open feel.
Stained glass windows are throughout the interior of the building. One window has the ancient arms of the City of Sydney and is quite beautiful.

Inside the building are two mechanical clocks, each one featuring dioramas and moving figures from moments in Australian history. The first clock is the Royal Clock. The clock was designed by Neil Glasser and made by Thwaites & Reed of Hastings in England. The clock shows scenes of English royalty from King John signing the Magna Carta to the execution of King Charles I. The second clock is The Great Australian Clock. It was designed and made by Chris Cook. There are 33 scenes from Australian history, seen from both Aboriginal and European perspectives. An Aboriginal hunter circles the exterior of the clock continuously, representing the never-ending passage of time.

There are also two large glass cases inside the building. The first case contains an Imperial Chinese Bridal Carriage made entirely of jade and weighing over two tons, the only example found outside China. The second is a life sized figure of Queen Victoria in historical costume on her coronation day. There are replicas of the British crown jewels(during her reign). The figure of the Queen in her regal attire rotates slowly in the case.

The building Has four floors of shopping. There are cafes, jewelry stores, clothing stores and more. It was amazing to walk through this building. We walked the four floors more than once. There was so much decoration and artwork to be seen before we even bothered to look at the shops.

The Queen Victoria Building is simply too beautful to be a shopping mall. The building which was built in 1898 is beautiful in it’s Byzantine architecture. This is a massive structure that takes up an entire city block. It was first used as a replacement to the Sydney Markets, then a concert hall, a library and then retail space. There are over 200 shops inside the QV B.

The building has some incredible stained glass windows and beautiful wood work. There are two clocks in the building: one displays Bristish Queen and Kings of History and the other
has examples of Australian highlights. Ther is also a central exhibit with replicas of the British crown jewels at the time of Queen Victoria’s reign as well as a full scale coach.

Even if you aren’t in the mood to shop you must come to see this beautiful piece of architecture for yourself.

This outstanding building occupies an entire city block. It was built in 1898 to replace the original Sydney Markets.
Later, it accommodated a concert hall, which eventually became the City Library.
In 1984 it was completely refurbished as a shopping centre, with more than 200 shops.
The renovations were done by the Malaysian company Ipoh Garden Berhad.
The turn of the century charm of this building was successfully retained.

This building — called the QVB by Sydneysiders — is beautiful. If you’re into nice buildings, go check it out. The shops, however, are very high priced – so if you’re thinking about buying anything, be prepared for the pricetag!!

Information Desks are located near the centre dome on both Ground Level and Level Two, where you can get centre directions, general information and a city map to assist you around town.

The QVB also provides a guided walking tour through the QVB with a member of the Information Staff who are IATG certified Tourist guides. On the tour you will be provided with historical facts and figures on one of Sydney’s most famous buildings. Tours run twice daily and leave from the Information Desk. Book through the info desk (or call the number below).

The basement does have restaurants and a stop of a train station.

The lower, mezzanine level (basement) provides one of the city’s busiest pedestrian concourses connecting Town Hall railway station to the Pitt Street Mall.

At ground level, the gradual rise in George Street has been cleverly absorbed into the design with shops steadily rising in height along the length of the block.

The QVB is open: M-W & F-S 9am – 6pm; Th: 9am – 9pm; Sun. & public holidays I I am – 5pm. Some stores, cafes, & restaurants open longer.

There are few more historic places in Australia. This is where the First Fleet landed in 1788 to forge Australia’s first settlement on Sydney Cove. This is where Australia’s first warriors set sail for the shores of Gallipoli. It was this harbour that received those that survived Australia’s most famous battle. As remembered in the famous song, “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”:

“And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay, I looked at the place where me legs used to be.
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me, to grieve, to mourn, and to pity.”

Today it is more famous for culture and celebrations. It hosts the Sydney Opera House and offers great views across the harbour to Sydney Harbour Bridge. You can’t get a better spot to watch the famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display than here.

One of the bestknown buildings of Circular Quai is the Customs House, a historic Sydney landmark built initially in 1844-1845, the building was used as the headquarters of the Customs Service until 1990. Then it was sold to the City of Sydney Council in 1994 in order to be used for exhibitions and private festivities and since 2003, it has also become the new home of a Library.
On top of the facade you will find the Coat of arms of the United Kingdom. The coat features the motto of English monarchs, Dieu et mon droit (God and my right), and the motto of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shamed be he who thinks ill of it) on a representation of the Garter behind the shield.
I also had a short look inside, BUT it was locked already and I had just a glance through a window: So in my last picture you can see a bit of the great glassfloor with a small-scale model of Sydney underneath !
…and there is a great staircase in the library.

Bennelong Point is the tip of the peninsula, where you will find the Sydney Opera House. Bennelong Point is a great place to relax and enjoy the view of the Opera House in a completely new angle, there are cafes and restaurants, souvenirshops and lots of benches.
When the first fleet of settlers had arrived in Sydney in 1788 right there in the bay next to Bennelong Point they first arrested Arabanoo, a young Aborigine, who was able to speak and understand english quite well within a short time, but he died already in 1789 and they had to search for somebody else.
The idea behind the arrest was mainly to learn from them how to adapt to the new Continent. After the death of Arabanoo they arrested Bennelong. He soon became an agent between both cultures and he also is considdered having been the creator of the australian Aboriginal-Englisch.

Circular Quay is at the northern end of the city-centre and consists of the streets and buildings around Sydney Cove.The eastern end of Circular Quay is Bennelong Point with the famous Opera House and the western end is Campbells Cove, next to the Harbour Bridge.
The first fleet of settlers had arrived in Sydney in 1788 at this very bay, that was a great natural port and they started to build their first settlement with the name Sydney there. The bay looks like a Semi-Circle and this is why they called it first Semi-Circular Quay and later just Circular Quay.
Nowadays it is a great boulevard with lots of cafes, restaurants and shops and it is also an important hub for Trains, ferries, cruises or fishing-trips with small ships to the islands around Sydney and last but not least there is also a large pier for a giant cruiseship, like you can see in the last 2 photos of my extra pictures.

Another thing to do at CUSTOMS HOUSE is.. when you walk into the foyer there is a glass floor and underneath it is a fantastic model of the Sydney CBD..(Commercial Business District) .This is extremely well done and is excellent for a visitor to see where one is and the way to get to another city destination..also it gives one an idea of the distance if you are walking…as I do…Most Sydneysiders don’t even know of this place..Here also you can get a coffee and sit and read the daily paper from your city in a quiet surrounding…just great place to sit and relax after maybe long walks in the area… NB:try and take photos without flash to avoid reflections off the glass floor..(if possible use a polarising filter to stop reflection)…There is also a library here upstairs that quite often has photo exhibitions etc..being a libary there are computers to use if needed..and in this lovely old building is the interesting history of the Australian Customs and Immigration Department..

We came down here on the first day to get a ferry to Manly, and when we got off the ferry we saw all kinds of things were happening down here. There was a unicyclist who was getting ready to juggle fire brands.

I even took a photo of one of the plaques on the Writer’s Walk – it was the one for Barry Humphries and it said
“I think that I could never spy
A poem lovely as a pie
A banquet in a single course
Blushing with rich tomato Sauce”

I had also heard that this would be a good place to eat. Unfortunately, we were just too tired and went back to the hotel and took a nap. And I never got back here to see all the action.

I have found that if there is some kind of tower that gives you a view of the city, it is a good thing to do after you are a little familiar with the city (NOT when you first get there) and when the weather is nice and clear. Also that if there is a restaurant, you can go eat in the restaurant and while the food may be more expensive, the meal includes the tower visit. Lunch will be cheaper than dinner. If you get an on-line ticket it is $18AU for an adult.

11.30am – 2.00pm

Dinner Daily
5pm – 9.00pm

We went down to the concierge desk and made a reservation for lunch at the Sydney Tower for 11:30 which was their first lunch sitting. We got there too early, but eventually they let us go up in the elevator – it took less than a minute to get up to the restaurant

It took 90 minutes for us to do a complete circuit. The weather was gorgeous and clear and sunny. I had fixed my camera as to the size photos it was taken and I was much happier with them. We saw the lightship and lighthouse from there too. Unlike in NYC and Seattle, there was no map that showed what the things we were looking at were.

As is my norm when I get to a new city a quick elevation to the highest point was a priority in Sydney.

That highest point is’nt to hard to spot for pretty obvious reasons. Went early Sunday morning and there were no queue’s of any note, lift up to the top in no time at all.

On reaching the top the panoramic views of Sydneys most famous sites is certainly worth making the effort for. Watching the planes land is fun, you are about the same altitude as many of them and watching the airport is like watching some kind of toy town.

You can spot the Aussie Olympic Stadium in the distance one way and easily see the Northern Beach suburbs in the other, guess you can see for miles and miles on a clear Sunny day, of which Sydney has more than its fair share.

I notice now you can actually go outside at the top on the SkyWalk, no doubt they will charge you extra for that though.

Another great Sydney landmark this 305m tall tower has the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere, and its said that on a clear day you can see the Blue Mountains 100km away, l have no idea if this is true, it was raining so much we could scarcely see across the street, so we gave the tower a miss

it costs $19.80 to go up the tower, this includes admission to the Skytour, a virtual ride, there are also revolving restaurants, it takes about 70 minutes for the tower to complete a revolution so chew slowly if you want to get all the way around

the tower is open daily from 9.30 to 22.30 [ Saturdays 23.30 ]

Sydney’s Centerpoint Tower (now officially called Sydney Tower) is a great place to get an amazing 360 degree view of Sydney and the surrounding areas. It is the highest point in town, sitting 250 metres above the ground.

This is a good place to start your trip in Sydney. It is nice to come here to see the city during daylight and to get a different perspective at night. There is also a revolving restaurant (see my restaurant tips).

It is open from 9 AM – 10:30 PM daily. Adults can get in for AU$22 and children for $13.20. Seniors/students are charged $15.85.

This is definitely a “must do” thing whilst in Sydney. With 360 degree panoramic views over the whole of Sydney, on a clear day you can see for miles and miles.

Sydney tower consists of many shops, an observation deck, restaurants up the top, oztrek, and skywalk. It is rated as one of the safest buildings in the world.

It has 1504 stair, but dont worry, they will also let you catch the lift to the top!!! The turrett at the top can hold 960 people and it is 250metres/820feet high. It was opened in 1972.

The construction of Sydney Tower Centrepoint began in 1970 with the first 52 shops opening in 1972. The office component was completed in 1974 and the final stage of the complex: The Sydney Tower was opened to the public in 1981.

Sydney Tower is the highest point (250 m) above the city, with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the beautiful city. You’ll be amazed by the fantastic views! This is a must in Sydney.

Besides the spectacular view, the Sydney Tower also offers the OzTrek and the Sydney Skywalk. The OzTrek is a ride with 180-degree cinema screens, special effects and real-motion seating! I was not impressed by the OzTrek, but if you are travelling with kids this could be fun. You can also try the Sydney Skywalk, which is an adventure walk outside the golden turret of the Sydney Tower. I didn’t go, so I can’t comment.

Sydney most visible icon with a height of 304 m is the Sydney Tower, formerly known as Centrepoint Tower or AMP Tower that serves as both a communications tower and as a tourist facility.
The Centrepoint Tower project began in late 1970 and it started with the construction of a sixteen level reinforced concrete building. The building was completed in 1974 that accommodated shops and offices. The construction of the tower itself started with the prefabrication of the 46-barrel units that formed the shaft. The diameter of the units is 6.7 m and the weight is 27 tonnes. The turret is an eight-level welded steel frame structure that was manufactured at the base of the shaft. As the shaft progressed the turret was raised up. The bottom part of the spire was erected in as the shaft progresses. The second part of the spire was erected when the tower structure was completed. The spire is made of 56 cables those weights 7 tonnes each. Total weight of the tower is 40,000 tonnes.

Sydney has many beaches and most people would agree that Bondi, which is undoubtedly one of the world’s great beaches, is probably her best. Bondi is where ocean and land seem to collide, the Pacific arrives in great foaming swells, and all people are equal, as democratic as sand. Bondi is also the closest ocean beach to the city center, has consistently good (though crowded) waves, and is great for a rough ‘n’ tumble swim. Other, less well known and usually less crowded beaches are, however. just a brief hike over the heads. These include Coogee, Bronte, and Cronulla. Sydney’s Northern Beaches also make for a deliciously sandy day trip. Extending north from Manly, where I stayed on my first visit, they form a continuous stretch of laid back ’burbs, craggy headlands, and over twenty beaches, finishing at Palm Beach.

Bondi Beach is one of Sydney’s most famous beaches. It is located in the Eastern Suburbs south of Sydney. The beach is wide and long and at times can be dangerous and subjected to rips. Please swim between the flags if you are deciding to have the day at the beach.

There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and hotels in Bondi Beach.

Buses run to the beach at 10 minute intervals from Bondi Junction. Services are limited after 7:30 pm Buses run every 15 minutes until midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights buses run every half hour all through the night.

The railway station at Bondi Junction is 2 kms from the beach. The train service runs every 10 minutes on weekdays, and every 15 minutes at weekends. All buses from the beach to the city go via the railway station at Bondi Junction.

Buses and trains can be caught from Circular Quay, Town Hall and St James Station.

Bondi Beach is probably the most famous beach in Sydney. This long beach streches about 3 km and you can enjoy the big waves of the ocean. There are trendy cafes and restaurants close to the beach. The lifeguards are always around just to make sure everybody is safe. If you are not a good swimmer, it is better to stay with the crowd while you enter the ocean. Due to big waves, you can be dragged into the bottom. Bondi Beach is a good spot for spending a lazy day, but you can also try the coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Coogee offering fantastic sea view.

Liz is a big beach girl and wanted to see Bondi. We hopped on a bus and went to Bondi Beach. The bus ride was easy and quick. We started our day lounging on the beach. The sand is super fine and soft. It was a bit windy in the morning but that didn’t hamper the visit. Liz took a dip in the Pacific as I lounged on the beach. It was great to sit and watch the waves crash, the surfers and the people strolling by. The weather was beautiful and we had a fabulous day.

While there on this first visit we had the experience to watch several Japanese businessmen in full suits walking the beach with their pant legs rolled up. Liz didn’t seem to notice them as much as she was enjoying the surf, but the whole scene to me was quite entertaining.

On our second visit the beach was much more crowded as it was fully summer. We took the bus here from Bondi Junction train station for our walk down the shore to Coogee.

hi everyone.
i stayed in sydney for a month it was the best time .my daughter was out their for a year we travelled while i was their first thing was bondi beach it was amazing the people are so freindly lots of little bars and cafes.
next we travelled to the gold coast paridise island lots of backpackers their we stayed in little b&b; with breakfast £5 a night it was ok stayed for 4 nights then on to airlie beach stayed their 4 nights it is so cheap to get b&b; their we went to whitsunday islands to hamilton island and south moll island these places i will never forget .also we stayed in cains that was a fun place stayed in lovely little backpackers place lots of cheap bars and cafes and to finish swam in the barrier reef i reccommened oz to anyone go you will have a ball i did

How can one visit Sydney in summer without a visit to this beautiful sandy beach? In addition to the many fine restaurants, a walk on the golden sand or a dip in the turquoise water is an experience. Bondi Beach is only 8 km away from the city centre, just catch the bus numbers 333, 380 or 389 from Circular Quay.

Our Australian friends told us about this coastal walk. We started at Bondi. Hubbie had a quick swim, but I did not like the size of those waves. Then we walked along the coastal path to Bronte Beach. A bit calmer. We both had a swim. Then through a clifftop cemetery to Coogee Beach where we saw a shrine saying apparitions of the Virgin Mary had appeared there. The scenery on this walk is lovely.

Darling Harbour is a great recreation-area with various museums, an IMAX-cinema, cafes, restaurants , the aquarium, the Nautical Museum that includes various large ships and even a submarine on display in front of the museum, in the waters of Darling Harbour.It will need at least a whole day in order to enjoy and explore all of the various sights of Darling Harbour.

Located in Darling Harbour was the Outback Center promoting Outback Australia and Aboriginal Culture. The center has a wide range of outback and aborigal art for sale. The part I enjoyed most was their “Sounds of the Outback”.

The story takes place in the outback and is told by a young man and his son who perform the various stories with a wide range of ” didjeridoos”. The performance is breathtaking with a projector on the background projecting all the beautiful views of the outback.

I can not recall the young man’s name, but his story was quite compelling. Living in Sydney alone with his mother, after his father abandoned them, he got into a lot of trouble and his mother shipped him to his grandparent’s home who lived in the outback. He learned about his culture and how to tell stories with his didjeridoo. After many years of studying the didjeridoo and how to tell these stories, he realized how important his culture and heritage were for him and how he wanted to conserve it for his children. As part of his conservation, he is now part of the “Sounds of the Outback”. His performances are free and he doesn’t recieve any payment from the Outback Center, so he does ask for a small donation to support himself and his family.

Darling Harbour has a lot more to offer than just a Harbour and restaurants, but it got parks, art and cultures, a beautiful bay with city skyline, and even a Wildlife world and an Aquarium.

After visiting Paddy’s Market, I walked to Chinese Garden, and took some pictures with Skyview Observation Wheel. I continued walking along Urban Stream, and stopped at Sydney Visitor Centre. The first time I saw the Cockle Bay, I thought it had stunning views of the bay with Pymont Bridge and the City skyline. I walked along the bay, and passed by restaurants, cubs, and shops at Harbourside Shopping Mall. Before I crossed the Pyrmont Bridge, I saw Australian National Maritime Museum and outdoor display of submarine. When I crossed the bridge, I saw Sydney Wildlife World and Sydney Aquarium, but I did not visit them. I exprienced the Pyrmont Bridge swung to another end to let a ferry went into Cockle Bay. After I crossed the bridge, I saw this beautiful asian restaurant named “Chinta Ria” meaning ” “Temple of Love” in English. I belived this restaurant is opened by someone from Southeast Asia as its name is either Malay or Indonesian origin.

The HMAS Advance is on display at the Maritime Center. This Attack class patrol boat was commissioned in 1968 and decommissioned in 1988. Advance was one of 20 Attack class patrol boats built for the Royal Australian Navy between 1967 and 1969. The Advance helped shadow Russian fishing boats suspected of spying, followed illegal fishing boats, chased smugglers, provided search and rescue, and helped survey the West Coast. The Advance has a steel and the superstructure is aluminum. It is armed for small-scale encounters, with one 40-mm Bofors gun and two 0.5-inch Browning machine guns to fire warning shots across the bow of a suspect vessel.The Advance is still used during Maritime events but not available for public tours.

I have a love of ships and water vessels, probably due to my Naval past so it is always pleasurable to see such vessels up close and personal.

If a city we visit has a city aquarium then we go. We love them. This is an especially nice one. Right when you go in you get to see the Platypus exhibit so you don’t have to go searching for it. They seem to know that the Platypus is what a majority of foreigners want to see so they serve it up straight away. Good idea! With that out of the way you can concentrate on the vast variety of Aquatic Life that Australia and this Aquarium have to offer. They have a Crocodile so if you need to see one of those, they have it! I found most of the native freshwater fish to be pretty dull in color but the came in a vast variety of shapes and sizes. Of special interest are the two large salt water tanks that have plexiglass roofed walkways. One of them houses Dugongs, an aquatic mammal similar to the West Indian Manatee of Florida. Its tail is more streamlined but the face is very familiar. They have a another huge aquarium you can see sharks and sea turtles in and a Reef fish tank that is stocked with very colorful fish. If Aquariums are your thing, don’t miss this during your visit.

When in Darling Harbour..the National Maritime museum is well worth the visit..The museum is free of charge ..There are guided (free) tours inside the Museum and galleries..There is a 210 seat cinema showing short films..so much Australian naval history here also with the stories of the four HMAS SYDNEY’S that have served in the Royal Australian Navy.See Kay Cottees yacht “FIRST LADY” in which she circumnavigated the world..and Ken Warby’s world record fastest boat on the water…Outside the museum one can look look over ships at the wharf..ie: Destroyer HMAS VAMPIRE..Submarine HMAS ONSLOW..Tall ship JAMES CRAIG..Replica Captain Cooks ship ENDEAVOUR. part of the Heritage fleet moored here… Visit also the historical section of smaller boats wartime ship “KRAIT” and a immigrant boat that got many Vietnamese refugees to Australia.There is also an 1874 Lighthouse..and the welcome wall which is a tribute to the millions of immigrants that have crossed the oceans to settle here and call Australia home..This is wheelchair friendly..All information at ticket office inside museum entrance..

Primarily designed as a tourist precinct, Darling Harbour is home to many famous attractions for visitors to Sydney. Among nearby items of tourist interest are the Australian Maritime Museum, the IMAX Theater Sydney, the Powerhouse Museum and the world-famous Sydney Aquarium. (remember Finding Nemo?) The Chinese Garden, which is supposedly the largest Chinese-style garden outside China, is only a few blocks south of Cockle Bay and the Harbour’s South Promenade.

In addition to these destinations, Darling Harbour has beaucoup smart shops, cafes and nightspots. These establishments are all over an area called the Cockle Bay Wharf. In general, it’s quite a place to be in Sydney, pretty much any time of day.

Those of you who know me well know that I am a walker. I walk for exercise and relaxation. I particularly enjoyed the nice footbridge spanning the Darling Harbour. At night, it’s an especially scenic part of Sydney. (see next tip)

In addition to being a tourist mecca, Darling Harbour is, ah……..a very picturesque harbour, too. Imagine that. : )
