Is it a “things to do” tip, or a “shopping” tip?

I like to think of it as more than just shopping. To me, it’s something that I seek out where-ever I go! I love to just wander around, talk to stall-holders, browse and soak up the atmosphere. There are many things sold here – clothing, jewellery, artwork, produce, etc.
The market is held every Saturday 7am till 1pm, and sometimes on other days if there is a cruise ship in port .

Plenty of places to stop, rest, enjoy the view and take some photos. Half-way point, Abel Point Marina, is a good place to stop for a cold drink or a beer, there is a little club there.

We chose to do a day trip with Whithaven Xpress. This is a smaller boat owned and operated by a lovely couple, Terry & Gill, and their son, Dan (who looks a bit like a pirate)

Departing from Abel Point Marina, we set out with the first stop being some snorkelling off the north eastern point of Hook Island. Non-snorkellers were also looked after, there was a glass bottom boat so no-one missed out on seeing the wonderful marine life and corals here.

Next stop, Whitehaven Beach for a BBQ lunch cooked by Dan and shipmate Shannon. Dan’s chilli burgers were awesome! Watch out for the huge goannas who can smell the food cooking and are not afraid of tourists, though it is not advisable to feed them. Plenty of time afterwards to swim or relax on one of the most beautiful, pristine beaches in the world. The pure white silica sand has to be seen to be believed!

Our final stop for the day was at Hill Inlet, where after a short walk through a pretty bush trail you come across the stunning scenice lookout with views south where you can photograph Whithaven Beach in all it’s glory. Shifting tides colouring the sea & sand in shades of aqua blue – amazing! Don’t leave your camera on the boat!

I was very impressed with the crew who looked after my elderly mother so well. Getting her into the glass-bottom boat, in & out of the inflatable at Whithaven and staying with her on the walk up to the lookout, nothing was too much trouble at all, so thank you to the entire team & especially Shannon who wouldn’t leave mum behind!

The cost for the day trip, including morning tea, lunch, afternoon cheese platter, snorkel gear & pick-up from hotel was $140 adults, $70 for children aged 4-14. There is also a seniors/student discount $135

Drinks, snacks, underwater cameras were available on board at extra cost, and stinger suits for hire.

Whitehaven is the main attraction of the Whitsundays…. and if you visit Airlie Beach and do no take a trip out to Whitehaven Beach, then you may as well do Sydney and not see the Opera House! :o)

Whitehaven Beach is amazing!! With it’s crystal clear blue water and pure white sand…. Whitehaven is a world renouned destination.

Did you know that you can clean your jewlrey in the wet sand? ….Try it! ….Rings come up shiney new!! :o) ….but beware!!…do not drop your camera in the sand or it’s goodbye camera!!

calandraspheroid (contributor)

Whitehaven Beach has been voted one of the worlds best beaches!. It is almost 6km long and consists of a very fine dazzling white sand that is made up of minute powder-size grains of quartz and has been assayed at 99.89% pure Silica. Try polishing your jewellry with it!

A variety of companies offer day trips and multi-day charters that include a visit to Whitehaven Beach. Try Cruise Whitsundays, Fantasea Cruises and Mantaray Cruises.

Or for something a bit different you can access the island by seaplane or helicoptor. Air Whitsundays have flights departing daily and include a scenic flight over the Whitsunday passage, islands and Hill Inlet. The seaplanes land gracefully at an area of beach with few or no other visitors. Duration on the island is 1.5 hours and includes refreshments…sparkling wine and a small gourmet snack plus a complimentary towell.

Another unique way to enjoy Whitehaven is to camp on the island. A special company will help to choose your campsite and provide you with the gear. You can choose 1 of 3 different menu’s and your food is packed in eski’s. They arrange your transfer to the camping site by a special barge. You only have to get a camping permit with Queensland Parks and Wildlife.

Opened in 2001, Airlie Beach Lagoon is a great place to cool off without the worry of stingers. It has landscaped gardens, free BBQ’s, change & shower rooms, and a shaded wading pool for the kids.
Lifeguards patrol the area during the day, and there are security patrols nightly.

There is no charge to use the lagoon.

Well a trip to the Whitsundays is not a holiday unless you do some snorkling, diving, coral viewing and plenty of eating & drinking.

And what better way than to book a day trip out to Knuckle Reef….a pontoon in the outter reef that has it all!!

Even if you have never snorkled before….the team there look after you and with the guide and plenty of float stuff….all you need to do is to look down and enjoy the coral and colourful reef fish :o)

We had a fantastic day out at Knuckle Reef with Cruise Whitsundays and I can totally recommend this trip!!

In June this year I had the opportunity to spend 3 days aboard this luxury yacht. It was a magical experience and my memories will stay with me forever. Everything, from the meals to the facilities and the crew were top rate.

The Anaconda III is a 101 foot mega yacht and one of the biggest vessels cruising the Whitsundays. It can carry up to 32 passengers. All cabins on board are air conditioned and each has its own ensuite with hot showers. It has a large air conditioned dining room and saloon area with a modern flat screened TV. The spacious decks give you plenty of room to move around or for sunbaking.

All meals are cooked on board and include breakfast, lunch and dinner plus morning and afternoon teas. A well stocked bar is open with reasonable prices. Beers…$4.50, glass of wine $3.50 and bottles of water and softdrink $2.50.

The 3 day/3 night trip makes for a leisurely voyage. No rushing from place to place and Whitehaven is visited on each trip. Weather permitting you will also get out to the reef for an overnight stay.

Snorkeling and scuba diving activities are also offered and the yacht has two diving instructors and carries all diving gear. Snorkeling is free as is the use of the equipment. An introductory scuba dive will cost about $65.

Cruising on this yacht is truly a fantastic experience. At one point coming in from the reef we hit bad weather and rough conditions. I felt completely safe knowing our experienced Skipper Baz would see us home safely…and sure enough he did!

The crew are marvellous…fun, happy and very friendly…they will do everything to make your trip a great one….

When you think of a Whitsunday Island holiday you automatically think ‘big dollars’. It can be quite an expensive venture. But Hook Island is a little different from other resorts. Here everything is much more laid back and natural. No luxury accomodation, no spas and nightclubs…just raw beauty and tranquility. It is the perfect place to really get away from it all…

Hook Island was first opened in 1969 so it is a little ‘old’ The main attraction is the observatory where you can view exquisite marine life and 100’s of species of coral.

Everything is very basic, from the accomodation to the meals and it is not for everyone. There are camping fascilities or rooms with or without ensuites. An ensuite room will cost around $140 per couple a night while a standard room is $100 a night per couple. A cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the prices are very reasonable. A stay on Hook would be what you make of it. It’s different but definetely worth thinking about if you are looking for somewhere to just sit back and relax without it costing a fortune.

To get there boats leave the Abel Point Marina each day at a cost of $40 per person and while you are on Hook you can do daytrips to other islands.

You have to go to the Whitsundays. most trips are 2 nights, 3 days around $150. You usually stay on 1/2 islands or even on the boat. food is included, bring your own drink. They provide snorkels and diving gear. All trips will visit the famous Whitehaven beach on Whitsunday island, with its crystal clear water and the finest white sand you will ever see.

Bareboat charters are popular in the Whitsundays. Various companies hire out boats for those who are looking for a bit of adventure and something a little different.

You can have a choice of either a yacht, catamaran or motor boat. They come in all shapes and sizes from standard yachts to luxury motor cruisers. There are various companies that offer this service including Whitsunday Rent a Yacht and Queensland Yacht Charters.

Roughly prices can vary from $350 a day for a small yacht to $1,000+ for a luxury cruiser.
Boats usually come with fresh towels and linen, snorkeling gear, a fully stocked galley and navigation equipment. They have private cabins, hot and cold showers and BBQs.

There is also a $20 per person GBR Marine Park fee and petrol is not included.

Why not go all out and hire a cook to accompany you! Cost is around $230 a day plus meals.
