Townsville is dominated by the massive structure of castle Rock. It is a major landmark if you approach the town from the air.
It is possible to drive to the top, from where there is a lookout to get magnificent views over the town, Magnetic Island, and of the sea.
You can also walk to the top along a winding road (uphill of course) and the trek up is also popular with joggers in the evening.

Billabong Sanctuary is one of the best in Australia and is situated 17kms from Townsville. If you don’t have your own car, then a bus can pick you up and take you there.

The Sanctuary has 3 habitats of rainforest, eucalypt forest and wetlands all in the one easy location, which can be experienced in either a half day or a full day visit. The native animals are displayed in their own environments in natural surroundings, the experience is like that of walking through the Australian bush.

The Strand is a 2km long development along the main beach at Townsville.
It was constructed in 1999, following several years of heavy monsoon rain which caused damage to the seawall.
Ther is now a lovely promenade walk, as well as restaurants, cafes and shops.

Townsville is built by the sea and the Strand is an esplanade which runs along the shoreline. It has had major developments done in the last 5 years and really is a beautiful area. Long walkways, parks, swimming enclosures, barbeque facilities, restaurants and a terrific water park playgrond for the kiddies.

The water park is a hive of activity. It is a large pool area and it’s main feature is a huge bucket that sits atop a large climbing frame. The bucket fills with water and when full it tips over and pours gallons of water down over the kiddies….they love it!

It runs for 1.5 kilometres and is hugely popular. There is so much to do and see and is a great way to cool off on a hot day. Just stay out of the sun…there are lots of trees and shade sails to relax under.

Magnetic Island is a small tropical island just off Townsville. It is readily accesable via a 20 minute ferry trip from town. There is either a passenger only ferry, or one which takes cars as well.
The island is predominantly covered in National Park (Pine, Eucalypt and rainforest trees) but it does have several tourist resorts, shops, cafes, restaurants etc and offers a wide range of activities including relaxing on some wonderful beaches. fishing is also available.
We were lucky enough to see koalas in the wild, and some lovely rock wallabies.

Just off the Coast of Townsville – and I mean just I would say you could swim over if you were really keen and didn’t mind stingers, is Magnetic Island. I didn’t get over but my friends I was staying with had taken the ferry over and spent a great day relaxing on the beaches and having a look around.

Magnetic Island, just a 20-minute trip from Townsville, is a beautiful tropical island with 22 bays and spectacular fringing reefs.
Much of the island is national parkland, so you can explore the lush gullies, granite hills, rainforests and beach to your heart’s content.

Do some koala spotting, moke it around the island when you don’t feel like walking, and dine at the superb restaurants.
